This was the first level I created for Unreal Tournament 3 and was mostly a learning experience and experiment. The general layout was based on a funny looking cardboard box I once spotted back on my old job. The level takes place during a stormy night with rain and lightning strikes casting dramatic shadows on the ground and surrounding buildings.
The layout is based on a wide straight forward passage with a downslope in the middle. This is the fastest route and holds the most power ups, but it is also very open to enemy fire as well as sniper positions within the buildings and is therefore also the most dangerous. There are alternative passages through the buildings on each side that will provide cover from snipers and other long range fire. These passages are very narrow and could lead to some nasty close combat battles.
I tried to make the level look like a worn down building block in the modern day with as few sci-fi themes as possible. Since I lack any deeper understanding of 3D modeling programs such as Maya or 3D Studio Max I had to resort to certain sci-fi elements within the buildings. I still believe the modern day theme is fairly solid although it isn't 100% realistic. Personally I prefer to sacrifice realism in front of gameplay, especially for a game such as Unreal.
